Types of Rehab Treatment & Levels of Care

Depending on the level of severity of the substance abuse issue, you or a loved one may require multiple levels of care, or types of rehab to attain long-term recovery from addiction.

Types of Rehab for Substance Abuse Treatment

  • Detoxification: Detoxification or detox is when a patient partakes in a medically supervised program that will help patients overcome the symptoms of withdrawal. The length of these types of programs range between a few days (typically at least 7) to weeks. Once detox is completed, patients may choose to enter a rehab program.

  • Inpatient Rehab & Residential Rehab: Inpatient and residential rehab are live-in programs where patients receive supervised treatment and undergo professionally guided therapies to understand their addiction and build long term coping strategies. Inpatient rehab is typically in a hospital setting, while residential rehab though still highly structured, might be in a more “home-like” setting. These programs may last from a few weeks to months and longer depending on the care needed.

  • Outpatient Rehab & Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): Outpatient programs do not require overnight stays and patients may receive treatment for substance abuse treatment while living at home. Outpatient treatment is typically more flexible in that patients may still stay at home, work, and take care of their children while attending treatment or counseling at a hospital, treatment center, or mental health clinic. Outpatient programs have patients meet on a scheduled, regular basis, and some programs may even offer nights and/or weekend availability. These programs are typically, less intense than inpatient rehab as patients are not monitored 24/7.
